The PetSafe Project is a program focused on supporting survivors of domestic violence. Reports indicate that victims of abuse often remain in an abusive environment out of fear that a pet will be harmed. Escape with a pet is also significantly more challenging for a survivor to coordinate in a life-threatening situation. Yakima Humane staff will work with caseworkers and YWCA staff to allow complete anonymity for the domestic abuse survivors. On a case-by-case basis, Yakima Humane provides transitional housing for pets as well as food and basic care while the animal is with us. The pets in the program will also be assessed for medical needs during their stay. With PetSafe, Yakima Humane Society has partnered with the Yakima YWCA to ensure all members of the family make it to safety.
