A large foster program is critical to any shelter’s success. Fostering animals creates more space in the shelter for other dogs and cats. Animals who get to go to foster homes get a break from the shelter and their time in foster can increase their adoptability. Fostering is an incredibly rewarding experience and we highly recommend giving it a try, even if just for a month or two.
The Yakima Humane Society provides care for thousands of animals each year, some of which require time in foster care before they are ready to be adopted. Fostering a homeless pet is both a rewarding and enriching experience; it is also great for families or individuals who love animals but cannot commit to having a full-time companion animal.

At the Yakima Humane Society, fostering plays a vital role in helping us care for thousands of animals each year. Without our dedicated fosters, we couldn’t do what we do — providing love, shelter, and hope to animals in need. Today, we’re thrilled to spotlight an incredible family making a difference: the King Family!
Andrea, along with her family, joined our foster program in 2024 and has been a shining example of compassion and dedication. They’ve especially excelled in caring for our tiniest and most vulnerable kittens — those underage, under the weather, or in need of extra love and attention. Below are some photos of some of their fosters they have cared for with the Yakima Humane Society.
Andrea shares:
"I am so honored to receive the foster spotlight. Fostering allows me to give back and love vulnerable souls. Giving is at the core of who I am; it is in my soul. I absolutely love the opportunity to nurture the less fortunate, to show compassion and empathy for those who were disregarded. Fostering also allows my daughter to follow with the same spirit and love, leading with love. It also allows her to understand that animals are not disposable; they have feelings and are a part of the family, even if temporarily (fostering).
Fostering kittens has been a beautiful experience. To nurture them back to health and have their trust come back and grow. The purring and side flops for affection fill your heart. Everyone deserves a second chance and the opportunity to live life to the fullest.
Our experience has led us through difficult feline PTSD, loss, and feline medical assistance (finally a free certification). Through the rigor and essential dedication of a multitude of upper respiratory infections, ringworm baths, and syringe feeds, we will always be here for those in need.
Even though our adult cats do not appreciate when the kittens get out of quarantine jail, we love every aspect of the experience."
Thank you, Andrea and family, for everything you do for YHS animals. We are so grateful for your kindness and compassion!
